In 1942 Bainbridge Island was home to approximately 250 Japanese farmers and fisherfolk. On March 24, Lt. General DeWitt, the West Coast commander U.S. Army, issued Civilian Exclusion Order No. 1, ordering the evacuation of all Japanese Americans on the island.

From Seattle, you can walk on the ferry and to KIDIMU without the need of a car: Upon disembarking the ferry, exit the ferry building, walk up the hill and across Winslow Way. Turn left and walk about 100 yards to Ravine Lane, on your right. You can see KiDiMu, at 301 Ravine Lane.
